Gullane

In this project we were asked to collaborate with the architect, who designed the house to resolve
certain issues regarding the garden area.

The main challenge was the various ground levels to the front and rear garden areas. We used these to our advantage by creating major retaining walls, circular steps and a stepped ramp to retain these upper levels resulting in usable areas of interest.

The main feature in the rear garden was the incorporation of a flight of circular concave and convex "Lutyens" style steps with central plat. They would be both safe and a major statement in the garden. They were inspired by the turret feature on the front elevation of the dwelling.

The inclusion of the Lutyens style steps was very appropriate – Lutyens had strong connections with major properties close by in East Lothian.

The circular theme was continued here with the creation of a series of circular step plats leading down to an overlapping circular block paved entertaining area with associated planting.
